Current Project: Folktale week
For this year’s Folktale Week, I illustrated four fairytales that bring a touch of nostalgia and joy. As someone a bit introverted, I’m drawn to storytelling that speaks quietly yet meaningfully, and these tales felt perfect for that.
Here’s a quick look at my illustration process for Folktale Week:
1
Reading and Imagining
I started by reading each fairytale carefully, making notes on scenes and elements that felt essential to the story. At this stage, I worked entirely from imagination, letting the stories guide my mental imagery without any outside references, which I usually don’t do, so this was very interesting process and practise.
2
Sketching and Composing
Next, I created pencil sketches, experimenting with composition and perspective until I found the best way to capture each scene’s atmosphere and emotion. This phase was all about finding a visual flow that would feel both inviting and true to the tale.
3
Painting and Experimenting
For the final painting, I used a mix of watercolors, gouache, and colored pencils. I have a set palette I often work with, but I love mixing techniques to bring warmth and texture. This combination allowed me to build layers of color and detail, adding depth and character to each piece.
